Division 2 football here in the mid-state always makes for some exciting games and rivalries! Coach Cody White and the Brentwood Academy Eagles taking on the likes of MBA. Will Ensworth return to dominance with the return of Coach Roc Batten now at the helm of the Tigers ship. Year in and year out we can always count on D2 3A to entertain us.
This year we feel that the battle for D2 2A will be just as exciting if not more. At the beginning of this 2019 season everyone may have counted out the CPA Lions, even though they are the defending state champs, they also lost 30+ seniors in their 2019 graduating class. Thus far a team of mostly sophomores and juniors have led the Lions to a 2-6 season, which at first glance doesn’t sound so impressive. But considering that their losses have come to teams that are predicted to possibly win the state title in their divisions, I’d say that these CPA Lions are battle-tested.
Some may have overlooked the FRA Panthers this year! If you have then you should look now as they are off to a 6-1 start behind senior quarterback Sean Casey and Sophomore running back Jeffrey Vercher. The Panthers’ biggest test will come tomorrow against divisional foe the BGA Wildcats. If the Panthers are going to get over this hump they will have to put up 40 plus points like they have in their last 3 games. Win this win and we believe their confidence will carry them far into the play-offs.
A lot of hype surrounded the Lipscomb Academy Mustangs this 2019 pre-season with the hiring of new head coach Trent Dilfer, new uniforms Nike & helmets from Vicis and if that wasn’t enough let’s top it off by having Sheryl Crow open the first home game with a private concert! All hype?…Not at all. So far the Mustangs have handed the cross-town rival FRA Panthers their only loss and knocked off a really good Page Patriots team. We are anxious to see if the momentum will last for the young Mustangs into the play-offs when everyone is at their best.
