Five days after giving up two late goals to fall in the District 7-AAA championship, Smyrna won the Region 4-AAA boys soccer title 2-0 over LaVergne. “Conceding those goals late in the district championship was a bummer,” Smyrna senior Derek Knotts said. “To come out here and shut them out — perfect.” Smyrna (17-4-1) plays Coffee County in a Class AAA sectional on Saturday. La Vergne (11-8-1) plays at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Cookeville. Knotts gave Smyrna a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute. Late in the game, Devon Kuker launched a free kick more than 50 yards to Ben Loveless, who headed it in. “The whole game, I had been trying to hit Ben up with a long one,” Kuker said. “That one, we just looked at each other, and were like, ‘This is it.'” La Vergne had two good chances. Christian Rivera hit a laser toward the right corner. But Andy Mendez made a leaping grab. Another shot hit the top cross bar.
