Pope John Paul takes Bishops Cup 2016
Last night’s game was a tale of two halves between the Fighting Irish of Father Ryan and the Knights of John Paul II.
Our interpretation of the game last night where two private schools on the cusp of building their respective programs went head to head to see who would take the next step towards DII .
JP2 jumped on the Irish early in the first half going up 14- 0 in the first quarter thanks to the Knights offensive line opening up running lanes for Jamal Thompson and allowing quarterback Ben Brooks time to toss a 14-yard touchdown to Jalon Cambridge. Closing out the 2nd quarter Jamal Thompson scored on another touchdown run to go into halftime 20-3.
Everything seemed to be going the Knights way until the second half when Father Ryan put together two touchdowns on the back of Jackson Byrd. A missed field goal early in the third quarter proved costly as the final score indicates.
The Irish came out a complete different team in the second half and finished the game with an opportunity to get the win on a fake field goal however they came up a bit short.
JP2 notched its third win of the season for the first time in several years. We had an opportunity to speak with JP2 Head Coach Justin Geisinger after the game. Coach Geis was excited about bringing back the Bishop’s Trophy to Hendersonville and seemed to be even more excited about his team’s desire to win and not give away the lead.
JP2 will look to keep rolling next week as they travel to 2-2 Ensworth fresh off a 54-14 win over 3A state champ Trezevant. Father Ryan hopes to get back on track against 1-3 Evangelical Christian who also lost last night to St. George.
