For a team that had trouble all season putting up points, LaVergne over the past 3 weeks has looked like a team absolutely determined to outscore their opponents. The past two weeks of the regular season LaVergne was put in the position of win or go home. Starting with defeating Cookeville at home during week 9, at the time Cookeville looked like a team that was headed deep into the playoffs with a 7-1 record. LaVergne went on to beat Siegel the following week to finish the season 5-5 and just barely slide into the playoffs. LaVergnes’s offensive revitalization is being led by senior running back Roshea Grays. Grays finished the regular season with more than 1,700 yards rushing and 18 tds. Grays is big enough to be a physical back but his deceptive speed doesn’t lend many chances for defenders to get a hand on him once in the open field. Grays contributed 217 rushing yards in round 1 of the TSSAA playoffs this past Friday against Cookeville, this time at Cookeville. We won’t say that we are shocked to see LaVergne bounce back from a 2014 campaign that started off looking a lot like years past. They have always had the talent, such as receiving standout Quin Jernighan and sophmore sensation Maliek Gray, but finding a way to put all of the puzzle pieces together is something that LaVergnes coaching staff has finally figured out. Good luck to Coach Stan Stevens and the Wolverines for the rest of the playoffs…and trust us, they will need a little because district foe Oakland is up next in round 2.
