Hendersonville vs. Independence 2013
The Hendersonville Commandos traveled to Thompson’s Station to take on The Independence Eagles in the 6A Quater finals. Deemed the battle of the underdogs by us here at D1Highlights, Hendersonville played the roll well falling behind in the first half 10-28. Independence took to the air with receiving touch downs from Vic Wharton III Rashaan Gaulden and Deion Simms. Hendersonville’s prominent rushing attack was put on hold by the Independence Eagles, it looked as if they would walk away with the contest uncontested.
To start the second half Hendersonville made a big statement by scoring two touchdowns in less than five minutes to make the score 22 – 28 with a blocked extra-point and failed 2 point conversion. Though the Independence defense was falling asleep at the wheel their offense managed to put up one more touchdown from Dom Childress to make the score 35-22 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Hendersonville’s defense stepped up on several occasions in the second half, once pinning Independence on their own 5 yard line to force a punt late in the game giving themselves a chance at the game winning touchdown that would be scored by Corey Jones. Jones put up and impressive performance on the night with 209 rushing yards and the go ahead touchdown in the 4th quarter with 35 seconds remaining in the game. The Eagles fought hard with 30 seconds remaining to get into field goal range to give their kicker a chance to win the game. But time was not on the Eagles side and the final score of the game was Hendersonville 36 Independence 35.
