One of the biggest surprises as we are at the halfway mark in the season has to be those East Nashville Eagles sitting at 4-0. Coach Brian Waite has quietly put together one of his best seasons to date. They have big wins over Riverdale, Maplewood, Whites Creek, Kenwood, and potentially a down Strafford team that lost their head coach earlier this week. We had a chance to catch up with Anthony Collier, one of East Nashville‘s defensive stars who says that the reason for the success this season opposed to last had a lot to do with them being older. A lot of the players have been on the varsity team as young freshman and sophomores and now as juniors & seniors we have more confidence and belief in themselves. He went on to say that the coaching staff reviewed last season‘s games with them to show them mistakes that were made and what to do this season in correcting them. In regards to the defensive line any of them can make it happen, double teams and triple teams have not stopped the Eagles defense up front from causing havoc on opposing offenses. Collier mentioned that he believes that the Eagles secondary is the best in the city hands down! The coverage this year has allowed the defensive front to get sacks and tackles for a loss due to quarterbacks not having anyone to throw to.
It is still early at this point in the season with a lot of football to go. However, we would be reluctant to be a bit excited for the Eagles because of this time last year they were 3-2 with another loss to Chattanooga Brainerd during their official first home game at “THE NEST” going 3-3 into week seven. After week five the Eagles will play Brainerd again this fall before the gauntlet of their schedule against Giles County, Pearl Cohn and Clarksville Northeast.
