The Warfield Shield 2017, the most anticipated game of the season for the entire Montgomery Country area was held early this year.
The game between Rossview High and Clarksville High tends to be on the schedule toward the end of the year. However, this year was supposed to be at Austin Peay State University for the opening game. The rivalry is so intense that the two schools couldn’t even come to a decision about who would sit on the home side at Austin Peay.
The game was held at Clarksville High, stands are crowed, the energy at Hilda J. Richardson field was like no other. Rossview came out in their black helmets, white uniforms while Clarksville represented their purple uniforms and white helmets.
In what many were expecting to be an offensive juggernaut on both ends turned out to be a full defensive game. Back and forth they went.
Quarterback Skyler Luna ran up the middle for 51 yards to help set up the Wildcats of CHS in field goal position as they were unable to pound it in the end down. Kicker Caden Patterson missed the field goal wide right as that allowed Rossview to take over on downs.
Rossview’s Jaden Webber boots a 44 yard kick to put up the first points of the game as it was a battle of the kickers in the first half. Webber was able to add another while Patterson blasted one through the posts before halftime. At halftime, Rossview lead 6-3.
CHS received the ball second half and backup QB Ford Cooper enters the game as Luna entered the locker room at half with an apparent injury. Cooper and running back Josh Watch led the Wildcat offense down the field for a 1 yard QB sneak touchdown to open up the second half. Rossview’s special teams blocked the extra point.
The Hawks take advantage of the momentum from the blocked kick and take it down the field to score on the next drive by running back Fred Orr. Rossview takes the 13-9 lead in the third quarter.
Starts the 4th quarter, with the anticipation from both schools looking to take home bragging rights and the Warfield shield.
Cooper starts the 4th off with a interception straight to the Hawks defense. The Wildcats defense battles and is able to prevent the Hawks offense to go 4 and out.
All eyes are on Clarksville’s offense to see what they can do with the ball to score and take the lead. The Hawks defense struggled to stop the up roaring Wildcats as they took it down the field starting from their own 10 yard line. Cooper was able to connect with Watch for a 24 yard TD pass as the Clarksville High crowd erupted knowing their team could beat Rossview for the first time in four years.
Rossview takes charge on their last drive as they work their way down the field. Clarksville High’s Jaden Ramos emerges as the late hero as he intercepts a pass from Rossview’s QB Isaish Phillips to seal the deal for Clarksville High.
