It was homecoming night for the Northwest Vikings as they looked to continue to climb up the Tennessee rankings. The Harpeth Indians wanted to make sure their homecoming wasn’t anything to come home too. The 202 best team in the state, Harpeth wouldn’t back down from the 156 ranked team in the state, Northwest.
It was all Harpeth throughout the first quarter as Luke Gossett was able to breakaway for an 81 yard kickoff return to take the early lead. It was then quarterback Walker Weatherly who completed a 30 yard pass to wide receiver Zach Patterson to end the quarter with a 14-0 lead.
In the second quarter, Northwest was able to outscore Harpeth 20-14. The Indians lead going into halftime 28-20. It was still a passing game throughout the second quarter as both teams were able to record a pick-6. Despite the interceptions, both teams were able to score from the air. The Vikings were unable to convert the PAT after the pick-6. The Vikings were able to squeeze out a run to come closer to the Indians.
Northwest head coach Vernon Wright came out with a vengeance and a change of plans as he lead his team to a score under seven minutes to go. The Vikes were able to tack on an extra 2, with a running two point conversion making the score 28-28. Harpeth was able to tack on another TD through the air with three minutes to go. At the end of the third, it was a 35-28 lead for the Indians.
The start of the fourth quarter and the crowd is amped and ready for this final quarter. The ole faithful crowd helps pick Northwest up and allows them to score bringing them away by a point. The Vikings kicker misses another PAT. Harpeth takes advantage of the miss and strike for another pass TD.
Four minutes left to go in the game and the Vikings pull out a miraculous pass TD to go down by 2. They go to the ground game and are able to convert to even the score 42-42.
Harpeth is able to drive down the field with less then a minute and kick a 35 yard field goal as time expires to win the game. Harpeth improves to a 4-1 record and Northwest falls to a 3-3 record.
The Sycamore War Eagles will take their 4-2 record to Harpeth next week for their homecoming game. Northwest will take the road to play against the gritty 2-4 Knights of Kenwood.
