This week we have one of the biggest games of the season featuring the two of the top teams in Metro Nashville. The Pearl Cohn Firebirds versus East Nashville Magnet Eagles, which on paper looks to be a high scoring offensive game but both teams have a defense to die for. Pearl and East are located within miles of each other so the players know one another very well from Pop Warner to junior high days. The social media sites have been blowing up this week with lots of chatter about this game.
Pearl Cohn is led on offense by Keyshawn Vaughan at the running back position, and defensively by fly under the radar linebacker Koreyon Jordan. Those are just two of the many talented athletes coming out of North Nashville on the Firebird roster. TheEast Nashville Eagles are led by quarterback Middle Tennessee commit Isaiah Upton offensively and Wofford commit Lenox McAfee. We had an opportunity to watch East Nashville in spring practice earlier this year and let me tell you, there is a reason these young men have only allowed seven points to be scored on them all season long. We have seen plenty of high school teams practice throughout this season however that particular day in East Nashville the Eagles were laying the wood! Coach Brian Waite for East Nashville will have his young men ready to play against Vaughan and the powerful Firebird Bird offense. At one point during the Eagles practice Coach Waite said to a player that whiffed on a tackle “if that was Keyshawn running the ball it would be a touchdown”, stressing proper technique along with the players efforts.
The Firebirds (6-1) vs the Eagles (7-0) game will be played at Vanderbilt University this Friday night at 7:00pm. Can the Firebirds give the Eagles their first loss on the season or will the Eagles give the Firebirds their second loss on the season. We’ll have to wait and see until this Friday check back with us at www.d1highlights.net and follow us on Twitter and Vine @d1highlights
